Grady Club: Charleston by Boat 2023

This is the one you’ve been waiting for…our premier trip of the 2023 season!  We have improved on the 2019 and 2022 Charleston trips by expanding on travel time and time in Charleston, upgrading our accommodations, and including a dinner party!  As you read more, consider bringing family, another couple, or other friends on your Grady for this trip; they’re welcome!

We’ll depart the morning of Wednesday, June 7 and head south down the Cape Fear River, behind the Brunswick County beaches, across the North Carolina-South Carolina state line to Little River and on to Myrtle Beach where we’ll arrive early afternoon at Grande Dunes Marina. We’ll spend the night at the Grande Dunes Marina Inn.  Enjoy dinner at one of the resort restaurants or Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse overlooking the marina.

Thursday morning we’ll head further south and into the Waccamaw River, some of the most tranquil miles of the entire Intracoastal Waterway.  Jordan will lead us past Georgetown and into Winyah Bay before making a hard right toward the North and South Santee Rivers and through the Francis Marion National Forest.  We’ll continue behind Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island before entering Charleston Harbor where we’ll head toward the iconic Ravenel Bridge and dock next to the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown at the Charleston Harbor Resort and Marina.

Our staff will handle check-in and meet you on the docks with your room keys.  Relax and cool off in your room at the Charleston Beach Club (new this year!) or by the pool.  Later, join the club for a cocktail hour and dinner party (also new this year!)

Friday and Saturday, venture to downtown Charleston by water taxi, shuttle, or Uber, visit the neighboring Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum and tour the USS Yorktown and USS Laffey, visit the popular Shem Creek bars and restaurants by boat, or anchor at one of the nearby islands for the day.

Sunday morning, we’ll start the journey home.  Travel back to Myrtle Beach and stop over for the night before returning home Monday morning.   We anticipate arriving back in Wrightsville Beach about lunchtime on Monday.  While we recommend breaking the return trip into two segments, for those wishing to return all the way home Sunday, we will offer a trip credit for unneeded rooms and dockage Sunday night.

In preparation for this trip, Jordan will put together a series of planning e-mails with videos about the trip, what to expect, and how to pack.  In addition, he’ll coach the club along the way via VHF radio on speed, bridges, no wake zones, and other tips such as trim.  The trip route is in the protected Intracoastal Waterway.

If you’re curious, watch Jordan’s two-part video below on how to get to Charleston, filmed aboard his Grady-White Coastal Explorer 251.
