Feb 24: Boating Equipment Basics & Breakfast

The Boating Equipment Basics course is for new boaters and those who want a refresher of their on-board equipment, from gauges to controls, head systems and pumps, and VHF to GPS equipment.

During the first session, Adam Spiliotis, Greg Kline, and Richard Lane of Atlantic Marine will cover Yamaha engine controls and gauges, trim tabs, head operation, and pump operations. Here are just a few things you can expect to learn:

  • Difference between engine trim and tilt
  • Understanding trim assist, speed control, and neutral hold
  • How trim tabs create lift and when to use them
  • Understanding trim tab indicator lights
  • Portable, manual, and electric head operation
  • Head macerator and thru-hull fittings
  • How bilge pumps and float switches work together

During the second session, Jordan Davis of Atlantic Marine and Brandon Roberson of Garmin International will cover VHF radio operations and the basics of your Garmin chart plotter and sounder. During this session, you can expect to learn:

  • How to hail a marina, another boat, or US Coast Guard on the VHF
  • How antenna position affects performance
  • What different channels are used for, focusing on 13, 16, and 22
  • How and when to request a bridge opening
  • Using tracks, how they work, how to save, how to recall, difference between off, fill, wrap
  • GPS waypoint basics – saving, naming, navigating to
  • Sounder basics – understanding frequency, zoom
  • Tides and currents on your Garmin
  • Accessing Garmin owner’s manual
